Definitely get one with lithium rechargeables. Nikon has a great lens and its all about the lens but I prefer Canon just because I like the menu functionality better and the processor. I would go Canon or Nikon - theyre both good.

I hate to admit this, but I get service plans on cameras. I have gotten a new digital SLR camera this way and it saved my ass my wife is a professional photographer. When I worked at a Best Buy in college, we had many returned cameras and customers getting new ones on their service plan. However, on basic cameras, the prices are lower now 150-200 and theyre basically consumable items. On an SLR, I would get it, probably not on cheaper ones.

Ignore digital zoom you can zoom digitally on your computer, thats what cropping is, look for optical zoom. Most are 3x or 4x minimum.

Buy a larger memory card with the camera.

Most cameras are 10-12 megapixels nowadays which is plenty.

I would go and play with they cameras and see what you like. Just an example, my dad has big hands so he doesnt like feminine model cameras.

New models should be coming out before Christmas, so maybe look for discontinued sales.
